Elizabethan Sports


In the Elizabethan Era, people spent their pastime doing an arrangement of different thing. For example, there were many different activities which are now called blood sports, that were often played. Cock fighting was one of the most popular. This sport involved taking two specially breed strong roosters. The rooster and put into a pit, or ring, and fight. Sometimes to make the game more interesting, metal spurs are attached to the rooster and they fight to the death. The roosters are trained and raised like athletes until they are two. Then, they are ready to fight. The game is one of gambling. Men have lost tons of money betting on which rooster will win. In modern times, the game has been outlawed.

 

 

Hunting was another popular form of activity that many people enjoyed especially nobility. Infact, Queen Elizabeth was very fond of hawking, a form of hunting where a hawk it trained to catch prey for its master. Finally, Elizabethans played a form of “football” which was similar to rugby today. People also enjoyed many individual games including running, fencing, and archery.
